Chapter Fifteen

Why Won’t You Love Me, David Tennant?

It should come as no surprise to anyone at this point that I have an unhealthy obsession with the British actor, David Tennant. Was it his role as the tenth Doctor on Doctor Who that made me fall in unabashed love with him? That’s where it started for sure. For me, he’s “the Doctor,” better than all the rest; I love many of them, but none like David.

There’s something about his soulful brown eyes and playful smile that won my heart from the very beginning. And dammit, that beautifully chaotic hair is begging for my fingers. I love smart men, especially ones with two hearts who fly around the universe with companions who look like me.

I’m all too aware that I’ve seriously blurred the boundary between a fictional character and a real person. David isn’t the Doctor, but is the Doctor him? I’ve stumped myself.

When I first fell in love with David Tennant, I went on to create a love interest in my first series who resembled him. He was lanky and nerdy with glasses, but stylish and cool with his red Converse shoes and knowledge of popular music. A man who can discuss both physics and British alternative indie rock is going to win my heart, hands down.

My unhealthy obsession with David Tennant has manifested multiple times with the dating app, aka Bumble. I’ve swiped right on, meaning I’ve approved of, dozens of men just because they had a quality that reminded me of the BBC actor. That would be one thing, right? Many are attracted to Hugh Jackman and might be enthralled by a man wearing a Wolverine costume. That’s not so weird.

Okay, confession time. That, again, was me. I also have an unhealthy obsession with Mr. Jackman and have swiped right on men dressed up as Wolverine for Halloween. I’m easily swayed by appearances, what can I say.

The first time that I matched with a David Tennant look-alike, I let things go along pretty naturally. Besides being slightly shorter than the love of my life, this guy was a dead ringer. It was a little jarring at first. And does anyone want to guess what his name was? Ten thousand useless points for those who guessed David. This was fate! This was the man of my dreams incarnate. No, he didn’t have an especially interesting bio or career, but he was pretty much my perfect man. That’s why I couldn’t wait to tell him the truth that would ensure we had a blissful life together.

After the established contact and after we’d had a few back and forth text messages, I decided it was time.

I sent him this: “Have you ever been told that you look like David Tennant?”

I held onto my phone, anxiously waiting for his reply. That was like someone saying that I looked like Christie Brinkley. The young version. Oh hell, that woman is amazing, I’ll go for being likened to the older version, too.

David didn’t reply in a matter of seconds like I thought he should have.
